Tracing cosmic evolution with the Coma cluster

چکیده
We summarize here the first results of a new spectroscopic survey of galaxies in the Coma cluster with −20.5 < MB < −14. Differences between the last epoch of star formation (SF) activity in S0 and elliptical galaxies are discussed. Furthermore, we show that about half of all galaxies without present-day SF display signs of activity at z < 1− 2. Systematic trends of most recent SF epoch with galaxy luminosity are presented.

Triple Experiment Spectrum of the Sunyaev - Zeldovich Effect in the Coma Cluster : H 0
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect was previously measured in the Coma cluster by the OVRO and MITO experiments, and recently also with the WMAP satellite. We assess the consistency of these results and their implications on the feasibility of high frequency SZ work with ground-based telescopes. The unique dataset from the combined measurements at six frequency bands is jointly analyzed to deter...
متن کاملNonthermal hard X-ray excess in the Coma cluster: resolving the discrepancy between the results of different PDS data analyses
The detection of a nonthermal excess in the Coma cluster spectrum by two BeppoSAX observations analyzed with the XAS package (Fusco-Femiano et al. ) has been disavowed by an analysis (Rossetti & Molendi) performed with a different software package (SAXDAS) for the extraction of the spectrum. To resolve this discrepancy we reanalyze the PDS data considering the same software used by Rossetti & M...

The EUV Emission in the Coma Cluster of Galaxies and the Underlying Source of this Radiation
Observations with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) have shown the Coma Cluster to be a source of EUV emission in excess of that produced by X-ray gas in the cluster. We have re-examined the EUVE data on this cluster in an attempt to obtain clues as to the origin of this emission. We find two important new results. First, the ratio between the azimuthally averaged EUV excess emission and ...
متن کاملTracing cosmic evolution with clusters of galaxies
The most successful cosmological models to date envision structure formation as a hierarchical process in which gravity is constantly drawing lumps of matter together to form increasingly larger structures. Clusters of galaxies currently sit atop this hierarchy as the largest objects that have had time to collapse under the influence of their own gravity. Thus, their appearance on the cosmic sc...
